Let’s Get Real
Let’s Get Real About Non-Weather Water Loss Reduction with IoT
Evidence, Economics and the Path to Scalable Prevention.
Written by Craig Foster & Jim Strickland, Ondo InsureTech / LeakBot & Co-authored by Matteo Carbone, IoT Insurance Observatory
Research Highlights
Independent research, co-authored with the IoT Insurance Observatory, quantifies the impact of proactive leak detection at actuarial scale — backed by over 366,000 device exposure years of real-world data.
60%
Reduction in mains-water claim frequency
Measured against an actuarially constructed control, once a cohort clears the three-month mark.
$25M+
Identified US claims savings in 2025
Documented, auditable repair records – not a modelled projection.
366,000
Device exposure years, globally
7.3× the actuarial confidence threshold
60/40
Mains vs. drain-side losses
60% of non-weather water losses occur on the pressurised side of the system – the side LeakBot protects.
Frequency reduction figures are only meaningful once a programme matures. Our full whitepaper breaks down exactly how the results were measured – and why the methodology matters as much as the number.
How LeakBot Works
LeakBot is mailed to customers and can be self-installed with no tools or plumbing experience required. The device is simply clipped onto the mains water pipe, where the water enters the property, and an app downloaded to connect the device to home WiFi.
LeakBot’s patented Thermi-Q technology works to accurately measure both the air and water temperatures in a customer’s home. A leak will continually draw colder water from outside, creating a consistent drop in temperature.
LeakBot can sense the prolonged and consistent drop in temperature and alerts the customer to the problem on an app. A customer is sent an alert when LeakBot detects a leak as small as one teaspoon per minute.
Complete Service Integration
Customers can book a plumber visit through the app to find and fix the leak, all free of charge, before it causes serious damage. This end-to-end service is what makes LeakBot uniquely effective.

Research Methodology
Rather than publishing a single premature study, LeakBot's evidence is built in three stages - matching the level of proof to the level of commitment being asked of the carrier.
Proven at Actuarial Scale
Our evidence base exceeds the 50,000-underwriting-year threshold required to satisfy a serious actuarial sceptic. The question is no longer whether the sample is large enough - it's what it shows.
3-Stage Evidence Framework
The Results

40%
Net ROI in mass-market homes
163% in mass-affluent homes, and 980% in high-net-worth homes
$5/month
All-in Cost
Hardware, monitoring, and plumber-led repair — no separate call-out charges.
1-2pp
Retention improvement
Measured on average across LeakBot’s US carrier partnerships.
Real Life Customer Story
This is one of thousands of leaks LeakBot's plumbers have found and fixed — each one documented in a Claims Mitigation Report, visible on the carrier's dashboard the same day.
Michael Stanley
LeakBot User
“I was sceptical. I didn’t see any water damage and I couldn’t hear any dripping. But better safe than sorry and I had nothing to lose, so I booked a free plumber visit to take a look.”
“When the engineer arrived he pressure tested the system which confirmed water was escaping from somewhere. He eventually traced this to an upstairs cistern.”
“It was a tiny leak. I was amazed to learn it wasn’t a false alarm. The plumber replaced a faulty valve there and then, and the leak stopped.”
“It was a great service and not something I’ve had from insurance companies before. Our loft flooded a couple of years ago and the rigmarole of having the ceiling replaced and repainted is not something I’m keen to repeat. Knowing that LeakBot works so well is a big reassurance.”
The LeakBot Experience
Claim Prevented
One of 1,470 documented claim saves LeakBot identified across US homes in 2025 alone, preventing what could have become a major water damage claim, similar to Michael’s previous loft flood experience.
Conclusion
The evidence is no longer a pilot-stage promise. Proven across 366,000 device exposure years, the case for IoT leak prevention now clears the bar insurers actually need — a return that holds even in mass-market portfolios, and climbs sharply from there.
Carriers who commit to honest measurement now will not be waiting for actuarial confirmation. They will already have it — while their competitors are still running underpowered pilots.
Key Takeaways
Scalable Solution
Mass market scalable model with possible savings of $11 billion in territories LeakBot already operates in
Risk Mitigation
Natural next step towards risk mitigation for carriers serious about reducing household claims ratio
Actuarial Confidence
Backed by over 366,000 device exposure years – past the threshold that satisfies serious actuarial scrutiny.
Global Potential
Evidence spans the USA, UK, and Europe — validated across multiple mature insurance markets.
